The light at the end of the street
dtv | 2021
Elli’s real name is Elvira, and she hasn’t had a permanent home in a long time. Once, Elli lived a normal life, until a series of misfortunes threw her off track. Still, she has managed to keep her common sense and sense of humor. From her favorite bench in the park, Elli often looks across at the elegant townhouse where Lisa lives with her husband and children. Lisa, a magazine editor, rushes through life—household, job, and family obligations all demand her time, leaving little space for her children’s small and big worries.
By chance, Lisa’s three children meet Elli in the park and become friends with her. Elli always has time to play, to listen, to talk—something the children never find at home. But one day, Elli suddenly disappears …
This is the story of an unusual friendship. Elli, unconventional and without a permanent home, fights daily for a dignified life on the streets. Lisa, well-educated but overwhelmed as a wife, mother, and career woman, can hardly keep up. When Elli befriends Lisa’s children, she secretly begins to support the family—until the day comes when Elli herself is the one who needs help the most.
